Protea cynaroides  is also called bodhi flower or emperor flower. It is characterized by its bowl-shaped flowers, each consisting of a large, domed, central cluster of flowers surrounded by hard, pointed, showy bracts.

The flowers are colorful, ranging from red to pink to creamy white, but the soft pale pink bracts with a silvery sheen are the most prized.

Protea cynaroides is a shrub with red stems and large, smooth leaves. Most plants reach a height of 1 meter when mature, but depending on the environment, the height may vary from 35 cm to 2 meters.

The vigorously growing king flower can produce 6 to 10 flower heads in one season, and the flowering period is extremely long, lasting from autumn to spring, and even sporadic flowers bloom throughout the year.
